Autumn Nails & Tips For Stronger Nails

I've been looking after my nails properly for a couple of months now and my hard work is finally paying off so I thought I'd share a few of the ways I've been caring for them and helping them grow. First of all, when my nails are painted they seem to get much stronger and grow a lot quicker. They're quite flakey and brittle naturally so they really like the extra layer of protection polish gives. I've been going for gel manicures for a few weeks now and it's really been helping the condition of my nails, but I do like to change the colour of my nails every week which is the only drawback of Shellac. However, I received a couple of Vinylux colours in the post last week which are super pretty so I had to get the gel off and have a play!

Vinylux is CND's weekly nail polish range and as far as polish goes they last pretty well. I'm quite hard on my nails so it's rare I get more than a few days from any brand to be honest, but with Vinylux I get a good 5 or 6 days. I do try and protect my nails when cleaning but I always end up trying to claw something open with my fingers so it's no surprise my manicures don't last that long (when will I learn?!). Vinylux have just launched their autumn colours and I was immediately drawn to the darker hues of the Nightspell collection. There's everything from purples to burnt copper and silver - totally divine and super flattering on shorter nails.

At the moment I'm wearing Lilac Eclipse* with a little of Viridian Veil* for a little ring finger accent. All a bit fancy for me but I thought I'd make an effort now I actually have nails. The polishes apply beautifully and with the CND Weekly Top Coat* added at the end they're super glossy as you can see. The top coat is almost like a gel finish in fact, and once dry - which doesn't take very long I might add - they're pretty durable and you don't get those awful duvet impressions on your manicure afterwards. I don't know why that happens but its so disappointing after you've spent ages painting your nails! This is also one of the few top coats that does't cause shrinkage on me. I love the finish of Seche Vite but it's a real pain for that.

So how have I been looking after my nails? Well, as mentioned, I'm putting those rather unflattering marigolds on whenever I'm cleaning to protect them but I'm also making more of an effort to use a good cuticle oil regularly. I like the OPI Avoplex nail oil and have been using it religiously for a few weeks now - rather than once every so often like before. I have the full size bottle which lives next to my bed, and a pen version which I keep in my bag. They've discontinued them both now so I'm going to have to hunt down a replacement soon. I spend a lot of time on the train to work so I've been making sure that I massage in a lil oil while I'm sat there watching the world go by. I always push my cuticles back after having a bath and by also adding a little oil to keep them and the nail bed nourished they look much tidier. Hang nails are a thing go the past for me. I'm pretty good with hand cream anyway, but its a must if you want lovely hands a nails. Jo Malone Geranium & Walnut is my go-to.

I 've also found that having a squoval shape to my nails has helped make them stronger. My fingernails pretty much naturally have that shape anyway but my thumbs take more work. Luckily my  nails lady has sorted this out for me and I think they look quite flattering too!
